Synopsis of Interview of Royce Dockrill by Dick B.

Our guest this evening was Royce Dockrill of British Columbia, Canada. Royce and his wife own and manage Valiant Recovery a top-quality recovery treatment center in Kelowna, BC, Canada. And I first met both them at a large conference of the International Christian Recovery Coalition held recently at The Crossing Church in Costa Mesa, California. When the conference was concluding, both Royce and his wife came up to me, introduced themselves as Christian leaders and managers of a treatment program in Canada, and showed an interest in the Christian Recovery Movement. Since then, I have been in touch with the Dockrills by email, telephone, and mail, and have learned of the growth of their work in Canada.

[Our interviews of Christian recovery leaders and workers now enable and will enable you to hear those Christian leaders speaking from all 50 of the United States and a growing number of other countries. Our participants come from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, Sweden, and the British Isles, as well as Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, Texas, Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Delaware, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and others]

We learned the various segments of the Valiant recovery program, the accommodations, Christian ownership and treatment staff, and counseling segments.  Royce and his wife are attending a non-denominational Christian church, with charismatic bent. Often, clients join them in church services, and the Dockrills try to exemplify the Christ in them and by their walk. They emphasize decisions to get better and to follow Christ.

Their program presents a Christian World View of recovery as distinguished from secular and New Age approaches becoming so prevalent in treatment today. They favor the 12-Steps. They took training in the Genesis program to broaden their counseling in terms of prevention and intervention. They think their program should take a one size fits all approach because clients in recovery all have different reasons for using—anxiety, depression, grief, loss, and codependency, all of which can lead to relapse. There is one-on-one counseling as a core of the program—working with only 5 people at a time.

Valiant Recovery offers 30-60-90 program. And they now have a 5 year after-care program with case management, testing, and accountability. They also offer sober living which stresses volunteer work, giving back, church, sponsoring, and helping others.

As expected, our guest told us his views of recovery as a Christian, as to 12 Step programs, as to his own recovery philosophy, and as to plans for the future

In closing, we emphasized the 2013 thrust of the fellowship, mission, and projects of the International Christian Recovery Coalition. In a general way, it emphasizes: (1) The Christian origins, history, Christian upbringing, founding, and original Christian Fellowship program of the Akron AA program founded in 1935 . (2) A foundational knowledge of the old seven point summary and list of sixteen Christian practices early AAs utilized to get well, coupled with a foundational knowledge of the “new” 1939 Big Book program and its 12 Step Oxford Group oriented life-changing program stemming from defeat to a vital religious experience as the solution. (3) Applying both the old and new today as guided by and spelled out in our two recent books Stick with the Winners and Pioneer Stories in “Alcoholics Anonymous”: God’s Role in Recovery Confirmed.
