Synopsis of the Steve F. Interview—One you won’t want to miss!

Steve F. of Altamonte Springs, Florida is: (1) A long-recovered member of the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. (2) An A.A. member who was sponsored by Clarence H. Snyder (whose sponsor was Dr. Bob). (3) Chief Shepherd of the Clarence Snyder “Came to Believe” Retreats which now number twenty and are held in England, Scotland, Ireland, the United States, and wherever there is need and energy to put them on. (4) One of the authors, as well as the publisher, of  Our A.A. Legacy to the Faith Community: A Twelve-Step Guide for Those Who want to Believe, by Three Clarence Snyder Sponsee Old-timers and Their Wives, Compiled and Edited by Dick B. (5) A Christian recovery leader, and a participant in International Christian Recovery Coalition. www.ChristianRecoveryCoalition.com. (6) Married to Sue F., the father of two, and a businessman in Winter Park, Florida. (7) Yes. He does have a drinking period, and he tells a bit about it in the interview.

High Points

Probably the most important aspect of Steve’s interview concerned his meeting of old-timer Clarence Snyder; Snyder’s no-nonsense, specific way of taking AAs through the 12 Steps in six hours as soon as possible; and the simple and urgent need for those who want to say they are recovered to answer three beginning questions and get moving. “Now!,” said Stev,e was the epitome of  Clarence Snyder’s approach to recovery. The three questions put to a newcomer were: (1) Do you think you have a drinking problem? (2) Do you want to do anything about it? (3) What are you willing to do about it? And the only answer to the last question was, “Anything.”

With Clarence, there were no suggestions. Just laws. There was no Bible thumping. Just letting your light shine by attraction. And, as to when the newcomer should begin, the Clarence Snyder answer was, “How long do you want to stay sick?”

Steve then illustrated exactly how Clarence took groups of AAs through the Twelve Steps in six hours. And, in Steve’s case, the process began three weeks after he got sober and met Clarence. Clarence was a promoter. He often said, “Who would be attracted to a drunk!” So he advertised. He took 30 or 40 men through the Steps as a group. He spoke of the solution: “A prescription with 12 ingredients.” It was to be taken before a “lower power” got to work trying to confuse. It was to be taken before a “pity committee” took charge. It was to assure that the newcomer got sober and recovered.

Steve devoted a portion of his time to explaining what happens in the twenty spiritual retreats for AAs and their families that are now being held. He pointed out how on Sunday, the concluding of the three day events, the twenty or thirty people who had come in with pale faces and fear were given a gold chip for their real surrender to Jesus Christ. They were then to go out, spread the word, continue the legacy, and do the work.

The Our A.A. Legacy to the Faith Community twelve step guide has now been used by at least 20,000 people. It covers the history, the actual taking of the steps, and the methods for conducting and leading a retreat. It can be obtained from Steve for $3.50 a copy, including postage. Details are found on www.cametobelieve.org. Steve’s A.A. phone number is 407 862 5900. His email is steve@cametobelieve.org. Payment in advance is required.

We encourage all listeners to go to the website, locate one of the retreat dates, and locations. Obtain a copy of the Our A.A. Legacy to the Faith Community guides; and take the 12 Steps at one of the retreats or as an organized group. There are speakers at the retreats; testimonies by those who have “come to believe;” and opportunity for prayer and praise. I myself have been privileged to attend and be a speaker at several of these retreats—in Florida, Wisconsin, and Southern California.

Our guest is Steve F., businessman, Christian Recovery leader, and long-recovered member of the Alcoholics Anonymous Fellowship. Steve has a lovely wife Sue and two grown children. Steve and Sue live in Winter Park, Florida. And my son Ken and I have known both Steve and Sue for a long time. Our experience with them has been heightened by appearances as speaker at the Life Enrichment Retreats founded by A.A. pioneer Clarence H. Snyder; our mutual friendship with Clarence’s wife Grace (“Amazing Grace”) Snyder; our work on the book That Amazing Grace; Steve’s support as a benefactor for large chunks of our work; and my work with Steve and two other sponsees of Clarence H. Snyder on the Our Legacy Guidebook – which has now attracted 20,000 readers.

Steve will tell us a little about his life, education, business, family, faith, drinking period, work as musician, and hands-on service to newcomers in Alcoholics Anonymous.

He will also cover his experience as one of Clarence Snyder’s many sponsees, the unusual accomplishments of Clarence, and the spiritual retreats Clarence founded. He’ll tell us about the robust continuation of these retreats in many parts of the United States and abroad and his leadership as the Chief Shepherd of these events. In particular, I know he will tell us of the purpose, writing, and utility for AAs and their families of Our A.A. Legacy to the Faith Community: A Twelve-Step Guide for Those Who Want to Believe, by Three Clarence by Three Clarence Snyder Sponsee Old-timers and Their Wives, Compiled and Edited by Dick B., and published by Came to Believe Publications, 2211 Lee Road, Suite 100, Winter Park, FL 32789. A.A.’s Vermont Roots in St. Johnsbury, Manchester, and East Dorset to Be Studied By International Christian Recovery Coalition Participants in September 3-8, 2012 Workshops

International Christian Recovery Coalition participants and other interested individuals from the United States and Canada will gather together from September 3 to September 8 at key locations in St. Johnsbury, Manchester, and East Dorset, Vermont. They will participate in workshops, tours, investigations, reviews of historical records, discussions of A.A.’s Christian roots and today’s Christian Recovery Movement, with talks by Dick B. and Ken B., A.A. historians from Maui, Hawaii.

The average participant in Alcoholics Anonymous, recovery programs, counseling, and even Christian recovery fellowships knows little or nothing about most of the extensive inspirations and influences for Alcoholics Anonymous. A large number arose from or were centered in individuals, churches, academies, and organizations in several Vermont towns and villages.

The source locations include: (1) St. Johnsbury, where A.A.’s co-founder Robert H. Smith (“Dr. Bob”) received what he called “excellent training” in the Bible as a youngster; (2) East Dorset, where A.A.’s younger co-founder William G. Wilson (“Bill W.”) was born and raised in a Congregational Church setting; and (3) Manchester, Vermont, where Bill W. received further Christian instruction at Burr and Burton Seminary.

But the Vermont confluences of resources did not end in the three towns. Important too were Emerald Lake, Glastenbury, Bennington, and Northfield, Vermont. Moreover, the better known individuals who figured in the picture were: (1) The Griffith and Wilson families in East Dorset; (2) The Burnham and Thacher families of both Emerald Lake and Manchester; (3) Bill’s boyhood friend Mark Whalon, a postman from East Dorset; (4) A wealthy businessman, Rowland Hazard, who carried the message of the necessity for a conversion experience from Dr. Carl Jung in Switzerland to several AAs—to be, and who settled on a large acreage in Glastonbury; (5) Two others. who helped carry the message of deliverance to Bill Wilson’s long-time friend and sponsor Ebby Thacher, who were: (a) F. Shepard Cornell, a New Yorker who regularly summered in Manchester, and (b) Cebra Graves, an attorney, who lived in Bennington.

The George Thacher family (parents of Ebby) owned a large home in Manchester and a cottage at Emerald Lake. The Clark Burnham family—from which Bill’s wife-to-be, Lois, sprang—owned a home in Manchester and two bungalows at Emerald Lake—the latter just a stone’s throw from East Dorset. The Thachers and the Burnhams became good friends. So did Bill, Ebby Thacher, and Lois Wilson, after a time

Both Ebby Thacher and Bill W. (Ebby’s sponsee-to-be, and long-time friend and drinking buddy) had a thorough Christian grounding in their youth. Ebby Thacher got his in at least five ways. First his parental family was involved in Episcopal, Presbyterian, and First Reformed churches. And perhaps a Congregational church in Manchester. Second, Ebby specifically remembered his parental grounding in later years, and as he attended Burr and Burton Seminary at Manchester. And Ebby was exposed to the strong Congregational influences at the Seminary. Third, Ebby attended Burr and Burton during the period Bill W. was a student there. Burr and Burton Seminary, as it was then called, required—as did Dr. Bob’s St. Johnsbury Academy--that students attend daily chapel (with sermons, Scripture, and hymns) as well as the local Manchester Congregational Church. Fourth, this was a period when Bill W. and his girl-friend Bertha Bamford were going to daily chapel together. Bill and Bertha were both involved with the “Y” and its activities while Bill was president of the Young Men’s Christian Association, and Bertha was president of the Young Women’s Christian Association; and Bill was taking a required four-year Bible study  course. Finally, during his time at Burr and Burton, Ebby boarded with the pastor of the Manchester Congregational Church where students were required to attend. That pastor was Reverend Sidney K. Perkins, who lived in Manchester, allowed Ebby to live with the family while attending the seminary, and brought about discussions which Ebby considered to be the high point of his life.

Bill’s girl-friend and first love, Bertha Bamford, was the daughter of Reverend and Mrs. W. H. Bamford. Bamford was rector of Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester, and lived with his family in Manchester. Bill met the Bamfords on a number of occasions.

The important A.A. links from the Christian upbringing of Dr. Bob in Vermont were numerous. They were largely confined to St. Johnsbury. And they took several forms. First, in the North Congregational Church of St. Johnsbury with which the entire Smith family were deeply involved. Second, in the church’s Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor. Third, in the Young Men’s Christian Association of which Bob’s father was president. Also, the strong Congregational influence of the Fairbanks family in St. Johnsbury. Finally, the Congregational St. Johnsbury Academy’s strict requirements of daily chapel, weekly church attendance, and weekly Bible study.

The Christian links from Dr. Bob’s youth in St. Johnsbury were quite similar to those for both Bill W. and Ebby Thacher. This was with respect to the East Dorset Congregational Church; the Manchester Congregational Church, Burr and Burton Seminary’s religious requirements; and, in Bill W.’s case, the seminary’s required four-year Bible study course, and its required daily chapel. Add to these Bill’s, presidency of the seminary’s YMCA.

Four other major Vermont-AA topics will be reviewed, discussed, and documented by the early September Vermont workshops. The first concerns the importance in the co-founders’ youth of salvation and the Word of God. The second is “A First Century Christian Fellowship” known as the Oxford Group. And with which all the named young Vermonters would eventually become associated—those being Bob Smith, Bill Wilson, Ebby Thacher, Rowland Hazard, Shepard Cornell, and Cebra Graves. The next topic has to do with the precursor East Coast Christian organizations and individuals that developed techniques of deliverance for alcoholics; and also espoused personal work with others. These were: (a)  the Young Men’s Christian Association; (b) the great Evangelists like Dwight Moody, Ira Sankey, K.A. Burnell, and Allen Folger; (c) the Rescue Missions; (d) the Salvation Army;  (e) the United Society of Christian Endeavor; and (f) the Oxford Group, its leaders, and activists. (4) The final major topic will include Christian recovery’s and early A.A.’s immense emphasis on abstinence, First Century Christian principles and practices, accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, relying on God, holding old fashioned prayer meetings and Quiet Time periods; Bible study; and personal work with, and in love and service to, God, Jesus Christ, and others.

Background Reasons for Asking Your Help

An event of great significance occurred recently with regard to our work of unearthing, collating, reporting, and disseminating the history of Alcoholics Anonymous and the Christian Recovery Movement. And then in our establishing and enlarging ChristianRecoveryRadio.com

We devoted twenty-two years to travel, interviews, examination of books and records, visits to archives, acquisition of massive historical documents and books, and then analyzing them and reporting them—one by one—as the truth appeared.

The cost was quite large. It would have been far beyond my reach, resources, and retirement income financially. It involved the cost of printing more than 125 titles, counting reprints and subsequent revisions; the cost of storing about 14,000 books year after year, and then shipping them. It involved the large cost of our traveling with attendant air fare, transportation, meals, lodging, and incidentals. It involved the expenditure of immense amount of time and effort by my son Ken B. and even many others. And, of course, it involved acquisition, maintenance, and replacement of office equipment, supplies, and incidentals. Finally, one of the most productive, yet expensive aspects was traveling to, staying over a week or so, and speaking at or meeting with scores of AAs, NAs, treatment people, historical notables, historians, curators, clergy, physicians, and large numbers of Christian recovery leaders, workers, newcomers, and the concerned public.

For the past six months, we have worked hard to scale back all the typical past expenses of books, travel, printing, computers, storage, internet presentations, conferences, and meetings. Our books are now print-on-demand which means neither printing 5000 books at a time, cross-shipping, them, and storing them. And now, slowly but surely, our books are being published in electronic form.

In doing so, we have made known to a growing body of churches, clergy, recovery pastors, care pastors, Christian recovery leaders, benefactors, and others our plan to continue our work of making the application of time-honored Christian recovery tools available to a host of people and institutions in the recovery arena, including those who want God’s help, and may be receptive to Christian fellowship of the kind manifested in First Century Christianity, the early Akron A.A. Christian fellowship, and in the hearts and minds of hungry recovered, recovering, and new alcoholics and addicts and those with life-controlling problems.

The need for continuing, expanding, and widely distributing materials exists because of the secularization of our society and our recovery fellowships, programs, and movements. It exists because of the dearth of information today about the effectiveness of Christian recovery organizations, leaders, and societies long before and at the founding of the modern-day Twelve Step and Anonymous groups. And it exists because of the incredible lack of knowledge that those who treat, those who counsel, those who speak about, those who lead, those who sponsor, those who serve, and those who are new to recovery from the ravages of alcoholism and addiction.

We also believe, from the trends and topics of the times, that a new approach is long overdue in order to accomplish our mission. Thus there is a greater need among us as volunteers for low costs, eliminating storage and shipping and printing expenses, using the tools of the time—Videos, audios, radio, radio programs, YouTube, forums, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, social media, newsletters---and making most of the material free for the user to hear, view, obtain, organize, lead, and use.

The Plan for the Agape Circle

Ten organizations and individuals have now become part of the Agape Circle

Several churches and individuals have already recognized the modest need and are contributing $50.00 per month each to Dick B. to support the continued research, writing, expansion, counsel, and growth of the application of old school A.A. and its Christian principles and practices in Alcoholics Anonymous, 12 Step programs, and recovery work today.

For large cost items, including those for conferences, major publishing expenses, and travel, several have joined on this basis. And we still invite and do receive tax deductible donations that enable the remaining and much more costly work. And we still define the needs and invite those gifts.

But for the day in day out work right here on Maui, our dream is to have a circle—an “Agape Circle”—of at least twenty Christian churches or recovery groups and leaders who will graciously provide a monthly stipend payable to Dick B. in amount of $50.00 each month.

We now have ten, and we invite you to join them. As stated, several are doing, or are about to do, just that. We believe the $50.00 monthly amount is reasonable. We have specific plans to live within the circle contributions. And we will deeply appreciate your becoming part of the circle with your church or recovery program, or Christian fellowship.

The answer desired?

Yes, Dick!

Our group will help your work by sending to Dick B., PO Box 837, Kihei, HI 96753 a donation of $50.00 per month as our contribution to the Agape Circle.

Background on Alcoholics Anonymous History, the Christian Recovery Movement, and A.A. Historian Dick B.

Dick is a writer, historian, retired attorney, Bible student, CDAAC, and an active, recovered member of the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. Dick has individually and with his son authored and published 44 titles and over 1100 articles on Alcoholics Anonymous History and the Christian Recovery Movement. Time to saddle up for early September AA Cadre Workshop in Vermont

Ken and I have checked out the dates, scheduled the events, contacted the likely cadre members, and welcomed others to the early September gathering in Vermont for workshops, visits, seeking, and learning the real roots of Alcoholics Anonymous in the boyhood days of Alcoholics Anonymous Cofounders Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob.

It will involve a substantial stay in the beautiful village of St. Johnsbury, Vermont--where Dr. Bob was born and raised. It will include the Dr. Bob Core Library in the North Congregational Church where Dr. Bob's entire family attended and Dr. Bob received so much of what he called his "excellent training in the Good Book" as a youngtser. It will include the archives. It will include the Fairbanks Museum across the Street. It will include Dr. Bob's birthplace and family home on Summer Street. It will include the Courthouse where Judge Smith presideed as Probate Judge. It will include learning where the nearby Young Men's Christian Association building was - when Judge Smith was YMCA president, where the YMCA conducted activities in Dr. Bob's church and academy. It will include the Athenaeum - village library - where so many biographical and historical books and papers are lodged, including newspaper accounts. And it will include St. Johnsbury Academy just a block or two away where Judge Smith was an examiner, where Mrs. Smith attended and had been a teacher and was involved as an alumni worker and historian. Also, where Dr. Bob attended daily chapel, required weekly Bible study and church attendance, and religious curricula in this Congregational institution.

Then to Manchester, Vermont where Bill Wilson attended Burr and Burt on Academy; and where Bill Wilson attended daily chapel and may have attended the Manchester Congregational Church, the resources of the Manchester Historical Society, and the records of Bill's presidency of the school Young Men's Christian Association and his four  year attendance at a Bible study course. Also the presidency of the school Young Women's Christian Association by Bill's girl friend Bertha Bamford.

Perhaps to nearby Rutland where Bill's family lived for a short time before the parents separated.

And then on to the Wilson House. This was Bill's birthplace. It is adjacent to East Dorset Congregational Church where Bill and the Wilsons attended; and where the family were founders, attenders, and funders. It is the church where the records and Sunday school teachings and sermons show the focus on salvation and the Word of God. It is the church where Bill's parents were married. It is the church where the Griffiths (the family of Bill's mother) attended and which they regarded as the family  church. It is the location of the large A.A. history library in the Griffith House. It is near to the cemetery where Bill and Lois Wilson are buried.

We will be conducting talks, workshops, visits, and gathering of materials for two or three days in St. Johnsbury and will hold forth from the Comfort Inn and Suites in St. Johnsbnury which is located very near to all the village locations just mentioned.

Come join us. Contact me at 808 874 4876  or dickb@dickb.com. Plan to participate, gather facts and information, view important books and records, gain a real understanding of the extensive Christian upbringing of both Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob, and be able to learn and help us disseminate all the valuable story to those in 12 Step Fellowships and/or are seeking God's help and will profit from realization of how solidly attached to First Century Christian  principles and practices the cofounders were in their youth and in their early "old school" Christian Fellowship program they founded in Akron, Ohio, in June of 1935.

The International Christian Recovery Coalition needs hands-on leaders who are or will become well-versed in the strong Christian background of the entire Christian Recovery Movement and early A.A. and can help those who want it to see the role of God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Bible in early A.A. and the role they can play in recovery today.

The Trip to A.A.'s Spiritual Roots Centers on Vermont

The Trip to A.A.’s Spiritual Roots Centers on Vermont

An International Christian Recovery Coalition Fall Leaves Cadre Workshop

With Informative Visits to Historic A.A.--Related Locations in Vermont

By Dick B.

© 2012 Anonymous. All rights reserved

Come Join Us!

As we have said, we are planning a Fall Leaves Workshop centered on the New England Area and definitely zooming in on historic A.A.-related locations in Vermont: the Green Mountain territory of Bill W.’s and Dr. Bob’s youth. It’s where my son Ken and I identified and examined in great depth some of the Christian roots of A.A. And we gathered an immense amount of historical evidence, embodied it in our books and articles, posted it on the Web, and included it in our www.ChristianRecoveryRadio.com presentations. But there’s nothing like the excitement of seeing it all for yourself with excellent guidance. And there’s nothing like learning it for yourself so that you can be one of those experienced Christian leaders who can transmit A.A. founding information fully and accurately

You will be able to participate in September 2012 events involving:

1.      St. Johnsbury and Dr. Bob’s boyhood home;

2.      North Congregational Church—the Smith Family church and location of the historical collections in Dr. Bob Core Library;

3.      Identifying Akron A.A.’s  “Christian fellowship” program with Dr. Bob’s Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor;

4.      The immense historical resources in the St.  Johnsbury Athenaeum (library);

5.      The St. Johnsbury Fairbanks Museum, the Courthouse where Dr. Bob’s dad was probate judge, the former location of the YMCA building where Dr. Bob’s father was President;

6.      St. Johnsbury Academy—where Dr. Bob’s mother was a teacher and later an historian, where Dr. Bob’s father was an examiner, and where Dr. Bob attended daily chapel and weekly church services and Bible studies, and participated in YMCA events;

7.      East Dorset and Bill W.’s birthplace;

8.      The Wilson House where Bill W. was born and where many A.A. meetings, seminars, and tours and offered;

9.      The Griffith House where Bill was raised by his maternal grandparents for several years and where he studied the Bible with his maternal grandfather, Fayette Griffith;

10. The Griffith House Library which probably contains the largest collection

of A.A. historical books and articles and pamphlets and memorabilia of

any place in the world

11. East Dorset Congregational Church, where Bill, Bill’s parents, and

both sets of grandparents attended; and where Bill attended church and

Sunday school, along with revival and conversion and Temperance meetings;

12. The Bill and Lois Wilson gravesites;

13. Manchester, where Bill attended Burr and Burton Academy, attending its

required daily chapel and four-year Bible study course, and was its president

of the Young Men’s Christian Association during his senior year; and

     14.Your optional personal detour to see the Fall Leaves display.

Want to come?

This cadre tour and workshop will give you an accurate knowledge of  A.A. history, A.A. historical collections, and A.A.’s Christian roots and origins most have probably never heard about or understood. It will provide you with important keys to the Christian upbringing of Dr. Bob and Bill W.  It will show you more about real “spirituality”; ie., the relationship with God that the Big Book talks about. You visit a location with thousands of A.A.-related historical items. It will take you to an area filled with New England charm. It will be far more than just a walk through a memorial building or two. It will be at a time when the Fall Leaves displays are there. And Dick B. and Ken B. will be there to show you what’s what.

What is needed to make it happen:

Prayer.

A real interest in learning something very vital about “old-school” A.A. ideas and their applicability today.

A zest for a guided tour to inspect, learn about, and handle scads and scads of historical evidence, attend meetings if you wish, and hear Dick B. and Ken B. report on 22 years of research as you move about and stop for some short talks.

We hope to develop a cadre of long-sober folks who can learn and absorb the important Vermont history of A.A.’s Christian origins, the Christian upbringing of Bill and Bob, and how they can be applied today

Benefactors to provide funds for our travel are needed.

Your plans for a car or car pool with friends.

Accommodations at the St. Johnsbury Marriott hotel and in East Dorset.

And an essential willingness to walk, look, listen, and learn.

Since this will be an International Christian Recovery Coalition workshop, we are looking for a cadre of Christian leaders and workers in the recovery arena who want to learn and pass on to others what we’ve found and you have actually seen.

This will be unlike other history and archive conferences, seminars, and forays.

You’ll see and enter the buildings. You’ll pick up and examine the historical items. You’ll explore on your own, too. You’ll hear from two speakers who have researched, written about, and spoken about the whole scene—many times.

This may be the only time in your life that you will have such an opportunity.

This July is the month to plan and let us know if you’ll be coming and when. It is also the month to help fund our trip. And then to make your car and hotel reservations.

The light is green this July, and we’ll go. In August, we’ll be all set. For more information, contact Dick B. by email at DickB@DickB.com.

Several churches and individuals have already recognized the modest need and are contributing $50.00 per month each to Dick B. to support the continued research, writing, expansion, counsel, and growth of the application of old school A.A. and its Christian principles and practices in Alcoholics Anonymous, 12 Step programs, and recovery work today.

For large cost items, we still invite and do receive tax deductible donations that enable the remaining and much more costly work.

We now have eight, and we invite you to join them.

Simple Spiritual Tools for Hungry A.A. History Hunters

A Special Message for

Hurried, Hungry, History Hunters

By Dick B.

© 2012 Anonymous. All rights reserved

[Christians in recovery are active, busy, and have a full platter with their families and friends, their jobs and activities, their church and fellowship activities, and the time they spend in A.A.

So who has time to read the Bible, the Big Book, Dick B.'s 44 A.A. history titles, and over 1,100 Dick B. articles on A.A. history and the Christian Recovery Movement to boot. Answer? Most people I've met have just wanted to get on with helping others in their own particular arena.

Yet, I have found that most of the people who have read and/or acquired Dick B. audio, video, and/or text-based materials have done so because they had: (1) known very little about early A.A.'s Christian origins and biblical roots; (2) sometimes been quashed when they had spoken about the Creator, His Son Jesus Christ, or the Bible in 12-Step recovery meetings; (3) known that A.A. without God is not enough; (4) learned that early AAs were able to develop a program that looked very much like First Century Christianity in the Book of Acts; (5) really wanted to help others find the same peace,  power, love, guidance, healing, and deliverance by the power of God that the Bible promises; and (6) not been keen about the "wisdom of the rooms," nor about "spirituality" (which was somehow supposed to be different from "religion"), nor about light bulbs as higher powers, nor about "choosing" one's "own conception of" a "god." They had known that there had to have been more!]

You have real choices:

         Encourage, organize or participate in a Christian Recovery program that meets daily needs. A program that includes opportunities for natural people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth; daily contact with believers; and frequent and regular participation in A.A. meetings and/or Christian Recovery meetings that are benefitting from the roles played by God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Bible in early A.A.'s astonishing successes.

         Become a "Participant" in the International Christian Recovery Coalition-at no cost to you (www.ChristianRecoveryCoalition.com).

         Acquire the A.A. and Christian Recovery tools that others are now using successfully throughout the world. For example:.

1. The Good Book and the Big Book: A.A.'s Roots in the Bible (http://dickb.com/goodbook.shtml).

2. The Dick B. Christian Recovery Guide (http://www.dickb.com/Christian-Recovery-Guide-files/).

3. Stick with the Winners!: How to Conduct More Effective 12-Step Recovery Meetings Using Conference-Approved Literature: A Dick B. Guide for Christian Leaders and Workers in the Recovery Arena. (http://www.dickb.com/Stick-with-the-Winners.shtml).

4. The 27-video "Stick with the Winners!" class. (http://christianrecoveryradio.com/Stick-with-the-Winners.shtml). Most of the videos in the class are fairly brief and complement the foregoing tools.

         Obtain as in individual--or for your study or recovery group, or for your church--at a big discount, the 29-volume "Dick B. A.A. History and Christian Recovery Reference Set." (http://www.dickb.com/index.html#Major_Christian_Recovery_Resource_2). To read every line of every volume? Only a select few would pursue that objective. To study the volumes one-by-one? Some may do that. To keep on hand so that you can consult the appropriate volume for documented facts on the various topics you or your group want to know more about? Now we're talking!

How can you use "The Dick B. A.A. History and Christian Recovery Reference Set?" Here are some ways: (1) If you want to know the content of, and how to study, the three sections of the Bible early AAs especially emphasized-Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5-7), 1 Corinthians 13, and the Book of James-use The James Club and the Original A.A. Program's Absolute Essentials. (2) If you want to benefits from the roots of the Eleventh Step, "prayer and meditation," and Quiet Time, use Good Morning!:  Quiet Time, Morning Watch, Mediation, and Early A.A. (3) If you want to know how the Oxford Group really did influence Bill Wilson and the Big Book's program, use The Oxford Group & Alcoholics Anonymous. (4) If you would like to know exactly what Rev. Sam Shoemaker taught Bill W. that made Bill call him a "cofounder" of A.A. and the well-spring of the Twelve Step ideas, use New Light on Alcoholism: God, Sam Shoemaker, and A.A.

         Become an informed leader for life so that you can easily pass on researched principles, practices, and biblical ideas that were and are the foundation for a prosperous and healthy life as a recovered and saved formerly suffering drunk or addict.

Development of the Christian Recovery Radio Program Idea

Just a few months ago, at a Christian Recovery Leaders Conference at The Crossing Church in Costa Mesa, California, Dick B. expressed a desire to have a radio show where he could interview the many Christian Recovery Leaders in the United States and other countries. People Dick has come to know personally by speaking at their conferences, working with them on their programs, writing on their forums, exchanging emails and phone calls, and holding meetings with them to exchange facts and encourage networking.

That Christian Recovery Radio idea did not gel right away.

Then, only a month ago, at a Christian Recovery Leaders Workshop and Conference at His Place Church in Westminster, California, Dick B. repeated his dreamed of idea. And Michael Liimatta, a well-known Christian recovery leader, former Education Director for the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, Founder and Education Director of City Division College, Consultant and Web Developer/Programmer, InfoWeb Services, and now a Principal with the Not-For-Profit Practice of  OneAccord, offered the much desired solution. Michael had been a radio interviewer for many years. And Michael recognized the importance of such a Christian Recovery Radio show to enhance the growing Christian Recovery Movement and the leadership provided through International Christian Recovery Coalition. www.ChristianRecoveryRadio.com. It was to let the public hear directly what a wide variety of Christian recovery leaders could tell the afflicted and affected about their approaches to recovery by the power of God among those who want His help.

The show was set up almost immediately. Interviews of those in Kansas City, Missouri; Newton Falls Ohio; Jamestown, Tennessee; Akron, Ohio; Nyack, New York; Austin, Texas; New York City; East Dorset, Vermont; Bridgeport, Connecticut; Los Gatos, California; San Jose California, San Diego, California; Brentwood, California; Livermore, California; Oroville, California; Costa Mesa, California; Westminster, California; Huntington Beach, California; Ontario, Canada; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Daytona Beach, Florida; Wyoming, Delaware; and Miami, Florida were interviewed in staccato form  These are the interviews thus far. They can be heard right now on www.ChristianRecoveryRadio.com. They are archived for future listening. And they begin the long-awaited series where AA Historian Dick B. interviews authors, historians, editors, AA speakers, philanthropists, recovery directors, archivists, clergy, garden variety alcoholics and addicts and codependents, treatment program directors, recovery pastors, counselors, chaplains, spiritual retreat leaders, interventionists, therapists, physicians, professors, youth ministers, and leaders in some of the major bridge groups like Alcoholics Victorious, Overcomers Outreach Inc, CityTeam International, Teen Challenge, Youth with a Mission, Celebrate Recovery, Alcoholics for Christ, Footprints, Came to Believe Retreats, churches, prison outreach, Salvation Army, Christian Endeavor, Christian Recovery Fellowships, and many many more.
